Companies House ID Verification – What Every UK Company Director Needs to Know

Since March 2024, Companies House has introduced a series of important changes that affect all Limited Companies in the UK. One of the biggest updates is the requirement to provide a registered email address, which Companies House has been using this year to contact businesses about new ID verification rules for company directors.

This is a mandatory legal requirement, and every director and Person of Significant Control (PSC) must complete the process.

Why ID Verification Is Now Essential

Under new anti-money laundering legislation, Companies House ID verification is designed to make UK companies more transparent and reduce the risk of fraud. Every company director and secretary must now verify their identity before they can file accounts or submit their annual confirmation statement.

How to Verify Your Identity

In most cases, the ID verification process is quick and simple, taking only a few minutes to complete online.

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • A valid photo ID (usually your driving licence or passport)

  • Your current residential address and the year you moved in

  • Access to your Gov.One online account.
If you don’t have a Gov.One account, you can set one up using your smartphone, photo ID and proof of address.

Once your ID has been verified, Companies House will issue you a unique “Personal Code”. Please let us have this code (it looks like XX1-X123-1234) by clicking here: https://manager.brightsg.com/ and adding it to your personal data

What’s Changing from 18th November

From 17th November, we will need this Personal Code for every company director in order to file your annual confirmation statement. After your next confirmation statement, you won’t be able to file company accounts without a personal code for each director or company secretary.

This is a major change to the UK company compliance process, so make sure you complete your ID verification as soon as possible to avoid delays or penalties.

If you’re unsure about any part of the process, or if you’re considering the most tax-efficient structure for your business, we’re here to help.

Did you know? Due to recent UK tax changes, companies with a single owner-director may pay less tax by operating as a sole trader. But there’s more to the decision than just tax savings — legal protections, responsibilities, and business goals all play a role.

Our team can guide you through the ID verification process and help you make the best decision for your business.
